The third piece in this bird series, I have been working on in 2010.

Its an interesting story, because I knew these small woodpeckers habitated in my area, but I never actually saw one. After I did this painting though, a whole family of them showed up in my backyard. :)

How did you do such a nice background? Just with a brush?

Actually, there is very little brushwork in the background. The pattern is created with a raised paint technique, and then the colour is done with VERY watered down acrylic, which is washed overtop, and left to dry as it will. The red "gems" are painted with a brush and very thick paint.
